Why $8.50 for an Ice Cream Sandwich is a Savings
June 16, 2012You may have read my recent post about Sprinkles Ice Cream and their million dollar prices. Not being able to stop there, I also expressed my concern on their Facebook Wall. And this week, Sprinkles Ice Cream responded:
"Hi Emily,
Thank you so much for taking the time to write to us. We work hard every day to please our customers. Sprinkles Ice Cream and Cookies are made fresh daily with the best ingredients, including Straus organic dairy, European-style butter and TCHO chocolate. Our prices reflect our commitment to quality ingredients.
With regards to our cookie sandwich, we can understand your frustration and wanted to explain further how a Sprinkles Cookie Sandwich differs from others you may get elsewhere. Our cookies are $2.75 and weigh over 3 ounces each and our dense ice cream scoops are $3, so the $8.50 price does reflect a savings. We've recommended to customers who do not want to spring the $8.50 to purchase a scoop of ice cream with a cookie on the side since the cookies are so large :). Additionally, you may enjoy our Sprinkles Sandwich ($6.50 each) which is a scoop of ice cream between two cupcake tops!
With regards to your note about our menu board, we are working hard to install our new menu within the next couple weeks! We hope to see you very soon."
Wait. So, let's see how much money I'm saving: 2 cookies at $2.75 (or $5.50) + 1 scoop of "dense" ice cream at $3 = $8.50. The only thing I'm saving here is any future trips to Sprinkles Ice Cream.
And I didn't realize the quality of food was in how much it weighs, not in what it tastes like. When they mention the cookie sandwiches I can get "elsewhere", they're referring to Diddy Reise (which is awesome, but probably has cookies that weigh less than 3 oz.). So if the quality is all in the weight, lets do a little math! I can get 4.857 Diddy Reise sandwiches for the price of one Sprinkles sandwich. Now, how much more would 4.857 Diddy Reise sandwiches weigh than one made by Sprinkles? A lot more. So by Sprinkles own logic, your $8.50 actually gets you better quality at Diddy Reise than at Sprinkles.
Anyway, this is the last you'll hear from me on the matter, but their out-of-touch response just had to be addressed.

Ugh. That's so frustrating. Don't businesses know that IF they're going to address a criticism, they should just apologize, invite you to come back and leave it at that? Comparing or getting into specifics is never a good idea!
ReplyDeleteThank you Rachel!!! That's exactly what I was saying! They should have just been like "our sandwiches are amazing, that's why they're one million dollars!" instead of telling me why I was wrong. Not that I would have gone back, but after my experience with them, I never wanted to return, now I don't want ANYONE to return!!!
