An interesting thing about this little pub is that a couple guys named Burke and Hare would hang out here in the early 1800s. Since Edinburgh was a center for medical teaching, there was high demand for bodies that medical students could dissect-- some doctors were offering up to the equivalent of four months pay for a suitable body. Burke and Hare were really good at finding dead bodies to sell to a local doctor, mostly because the dead bodies weren't dead when they first found them. They would often get people drunk, lure them away from others and then suffocate them so as not to damage the bodies. They were finally caught after delivering as many as thirty bodies this way, many of them lured from this very pub. So, fun place to eat at!

Hey Dad, did you know Arthur Conan Doyle was born and went to medical school in Edinburgh? I assume, being born there and living in that time, these kinds of events (there seemed to be a lot of them in Edinburgh) must have really inspired him.

On a lighter note, a Burke and Hare movie will be coming out this year! And starring Simon Peg!
