We left Paris yesterday and drove to a nearby town, Bougival. It's a small, charming suburb of outer Paris that's very close to Versailles.

We walked up to "The Center", an area recommended to us to look for our dinner (it was 1pm, but the lady at the hotel said that everything closed early on Sundays so we'd better go now). The Center ended up being these really cozy, quaint and windy streets filled with shops and cafes, and in front of them was every citizen of Bougival selling their used stuff. Basically a block sale.

We found a place to eat that looked really cute, and when you can't really read the language that's how you pick a place. It ended up being pretty good and I now know how to say fries in French-- "frites"!

The best part came after lunch. We had seen a crepe stand earlier and made our way back there. I get a little anxious whenever I am asked something in French because what am I going to say? I either a) look at Justin so they'll think he speaks French and defer to him, or b) try and act out exactly what I'm saying (my performance for requesting hot tea might win an award).

The crepes were really good. And really close to what we thought we ordered! I got a nutella one, and Justin ate a sugar and butter one.

We relaxed the rest of the day, getting ready for the next day, which was to be Versailles and then on to Germany.

But the next day was Monday.

And Versailles isn't open on Monday, nor is anything else in Bougival.

Bougival was not the hopping block sale, open cafe, crepe-selling city it was the day before, either. We walked down there hoping to get breakfast and found one bakery open.

So, back to Paris.

We headed to the Hotel des Invalides, which despite the name is not where the French send all the tourists they don't like. It was originally their form of a VA hospital, and is now home to Napoleon's tomb and an army museum.

This was decorative armor given to what would have been a future king.

Being in another country you can't help but watch their TV. We've seen a lot of celebrities doing commercials that don't air in the U.S. Here's one for a Dior fragrance starring Jude Law that we see all the time.

  2. Hey Emily,

Great stuff! Does Justin speak French? If not, what does he do when you defer to him in Paris? Anyway, Sounds great. Can't wait to see the pic's. Love, Dad
