Wattles Mansion
July 18, 2010Justin and I like to find historical places here in LA and go check them out. Last weekend we went to a place called "Wattles Mansion". We've driven past the walk way to the mansion a ton of times and we always wondered what it led to.
After Googling it we found out that it was a mansion that it was built in 1907 for an "Omaha businessman" named Gurdon Wattles. The estate has been recognized as "the only remaining intact example of the once plentiful Hollywood estates from the period preceding the film industry, when Hollywood was primarily agricultural and was a wintering home for wealthy Easterners and Midwesterners."
We drove to the walkway and then walked up to the mansion. It's really more of a house than a mansion, but I'm sure for those days it was considered a mansion. Plus it's built on a huge piece of land, plus the gardens, and there's a Wattles Park, so.
Standing at the front door and looking out you can see a gorgeous view of the entire city. Behind it there's a gorgeous view of trees and homes. It's known for it's beautiful gardens, but we didn't really get to see them because the gardens were closed for renovation. You can only go inside the house itself by setting up an appointment to check it out for an event (I'm sure they have lots of weddings there).
The main area (meaning the lawn in front of the house) is open to anyone, but because it's so secluded I don't think many people know about it. I say that because when we got there there was this super affectionate couple and their dog laying out and having an intimate picnic. It seemed like they did that all the time and never encountered any people, because they seemed slightly annoyed we were there. I kept catching glimpses of them like, cuddling and hugging while laying down, and then when they noticed I was looking in their direction they sort of seemed annoyed, but.

Have you been to Heritage Square Museum? http://www.heritagesquare.org/
ReplyDeleteIt's a bunch of old houses from Southern California. If you like random historical places in the L.A. area, you might like it. I was actually there this afternoon! :)
Hey Ronnie!
ReplyDeleteI actually have been there and it's really cool!
