I recently read Alicia Silverstone's book "The Kind Diet". I try to eat healthy, not eat processed foods, so this seemed like a great book. It talks about the meat and dairy industry along with pesticides on crops, and how studies have shown that eating meat and dairy link to diseases, bad skin, weight gain, etc. The book was a wealth of information and really enjoyable to read. It explains why you shouldn't eat (or should severely cut back on) meat and dairy, and how to go about doing that. It's a very detailed look into the food industry and if going Vegan is something you're thinking about, I'd suggest this book.

Alicia Silverstone is Vegan, and after reading the book I decided to go Vegan as well. I went about 20 days without meat and 10-15 without dairy and then decided this was not for me. I missed meat and dairy and didn't really see the point. The thing is, she is Vegan for a variety of reasons, one being that she doesn't believe in eating animals. I, however, believe that we are meant to eat animals, so I couldn't see cutting it out. However, I am trying to cut back on the two, along with buying grass fed meat and organic food, incorporating whole grains into my diet, and cutting back even more on the processed foods. The book gives great direction on going Vegan and has a ton of great recipes. It also goes over how a balanced meal should be structured, something I didn't really know since I never really cook. I made her Radicchio pizza with white truffle oil the other day and it was amazing.

She has a website, TheKindLife.com, with posts about Vegan recipes, food services, stores, and a bunch of eco stuff too.

I also recently watched "Food Inc.". This is a documentary about the food industry, again showing the meat, dairy and vegetable crop industry. I definitely recommend this film. Although, like all documentaries, it's somewhat one-sided, it is full of interesting need-to-know facts that will have you checking where the food you're eating is coming from and what type of food you should be buying. They, too, have a website and you can check it out here.
